Wasted labor
A series of objects
Author: Olesya Ilenok
During a pandemic period of self-isolation, I decided to reformat my time into action using the materials at hand: plastic and mouliné. The idea of taking the utilitarian function of plastic away and transferring it to the aesthetic field became the main focus of my work. For me, plastic became the embodiment of time gone by and its direct documentation through the act of embroidery.
Interpreting in my own way T. Morton's idea of a dark ecology, I treat plastic as a natural extension of our existence. Recycling is not its only option. Moreover, plastic is a layer of memory that will remain after us for many years to come. That is why I choose it as a material for recording my daily life, "encrypting" the message in the form of an interweaving of threads and beads.
