The Sensual Experience of the City

Changes in Contemplation is a series of projects about subjective impressions of different cities. These installations can be called urban casts or portraits of cities.
In the series, the artist addresses the theme of human interaction with the world around him and asks the viewer the question: Are you a stranger to the place in which you live?

In the featured series Changes in Contemplation, Olesya explores places through the practices of psychogeography. The research tool is clay with which she collects the body of the city as a memory. The imprints of various nooks and crannies represent the hidden layers of the city that can be revealed through the senses. The artist wonders what stories these places can tell, without a direct view, without information, but through touch, through sound.
‘Changes in Contemplation’ is a multi-sound installation consisting of clay imprints of Glasgow. The installation is made up of ceramic imprints of various surfaces collected in 5 main Glasgow areas: City Center, East, West, South, and North. The project presents the artist's vision of the city, offering viewers a new perspective on Glasgow through listening and tactile interaction with ceramics. The installation shifts the focus of attention from the functional use of the city to the sensual experience that may improve urban mental health.

The exhibition is supported by Creative Scotland.

The installation was made for the first time in my hometown Yekaterinburg in 2021. This edition of the project was shown at CCA Glasgow as part of the Cryptic Nights event in April 2023. By sharing a portrait of my hometown with the audience then, I gathered a lot of positive feedback:
